What is Club 1000 all about?

Can you imagine what it must be like to be a child whose parent has been sent to prison? These children are the invisible victims of crime. Often stigmatised and isolated, their lives fall apart.

SHINE for Kids has a simple objective. As the only organisation in Australia solely devoted to children with a parent or primary carer in prison, we put their lives back together again.

SHINE for Kids is a grass-roots not-for-profit organisation with Centres located throughout NSW, and we're now also offering services in Victoria. We are seeking your support to champion a community initiative to help disadvantaged children.

Why is supporting children of prisoners important?

The simple answer is that children shouldn’t be punished along with their parents. But they are. Ostracised and ignored, or bullied and told they are also criminals, they are much more likely to become the next generation of prisoners themselves.

Research tells us that the way to break intergenerational offending behaviour is to develop and maintain positive family relationships – it has a direct impact on the future lives of children and the successful re-integration of the parent/prisoner back into society.

SHINE for Kids intervenes in children’s lives to help break the cycle. Our primary focus is on maintaining family ties and helping children overcome the challenges they face.

Critical though our role is, funding is not guaranteed. SHINE for Kids is dependent upon the generosity of individual and corporate donations to put these kids’ lives on track and give them the foundations for a healthy and positive life.
